Why I switched to simulators to wind down at night
For years my before-bed game was whatever fast, competitive thing I was into. Then I noticed I was going to sleep more wired than relaxed. Swapping to slow simulators fixed that almost immediately.
Greenhouse Orbit is the one I keep open now. Tending plants on a drifting space station is about as low-stakes as it gets, and that's the point. There's no timer counting down, no enemy, just small steady progress toward a station that runs a little better.
People sometimes dismiss games with no real fail state, and I get the argument, but I think there's a place for them. Not everything I play needs to test me. Sometimes I want a system to tinker with while my brain slows down.
The offline angle helps a lot here too. No notifications begging me to return, no server-driven events pulling at my attention. I open it when I want, garden a while, and close it without a countdown hanging over me.
If your evenings feel too keyed-up, try a calm sim for a week. It changed my wind-down routine more than any app that promised to.
